Route 66 Remixed
An art fueled road trip down Albuquerques historic Route 66
A New Vision for the Mother Road
In 2025, Refract Studio partnered with the City of Albuquerque on Route 66 Remixed, an 18-mile public art experience created for the city’s Route 66 Centennial. Stretching across Central Avenue, the project brought together murals, sculpture, poetry, sound, and browser-based augmented reality by more than 20 New Mexico artists.
As Creative Director at Refract Studio, I led the creative and technical direction for the project’s immersive and AR components, working directly with participating artists to translate their ideas into site-specific digital experiences. I also oversaw the design and development of the project website, with a focus on making the work accessible directly from a smartphone with no app download required.
The project featured work by artists including Deb Jojola, Helen Juliet Atkins, Jessica Helen Lopez, Sonja Killer, Karl Orozco, Akilah Martinez, Lynnette Haozous, Jesse Littlebird, PAZ, and many others, exploring themes ranging from Indigenous futurism and migration to lowrider culture, ecology, poetry, film history, and roadside Americana.
Route 66 Remixed demonstrated how public art and emerging technology can work together at city scale, creating an accessible, community-centered way to encounter Albuquerque through story, place, and participation.
