Doulie
An evidence based birth planning app
Birth Plans to Communication Tools
Doulie began with my work as a volunteer birth companion at a large hospital, where I saw a gap between the way people prepared for birth and the way decisions actually happened in a clinical setting. Traditional birth plans could be long, rigid, or difficult to use in the moment, so I started exploring a more useful approach: a tool that helped people understand common decisions ahead of time, identify what mattered to them, and communicate those preferences clearly with their care team.
Doulie was ultimately an exploratory project rather than a shipped product, but it became a way for me to investigate how thoughtful interaction design can support informed decision-making, patient autonomy, and better communication during pregnancy and birth.
Designing Doulie
I designed Doulie as a mobile birth-preparation and planning experience that combined short educational content, guided decision-making, provider questions, and a concise birth preferences tool. The visual system was intentionally warm and approachable, with hand-drawn illustrations throughout to make clinical information feel more human without losing clarity. The project brought together my background in product design with my experience as a full-spectrum doula and birth companion, and became an exploration of how design can support informed decision-making and better communication in maternity care.
