OJOS DIFERENTES

8 New Mexican Indigenous, Norteño, and Chicana Artists reinterpreted monuments, tourist sites, and hidden historic locations throughout Santa Fe using Snap AR. Ojos Diferentes brings contemporary local art, rigorously researched history, and engaging discourse on topics such as tourism, colonization, manifest destiny, resilience, and conservation to anyone walking through downtown. Learn more on the project site here.

Ojos Diferentes is the culmination of a 6 month collaboration between Refract Studio, the Santa Fe Arts and Culture department, Santa Fe City Historian Valerie Rangel, and the 7 collaborating artists: Cliff Fragua, Ehren Kee Natay, Crystal Xochitl Zamora, PAZ (Mapitzmitl), Artemisio Romero Y Carver, and Virgil Ortiz,  and The Cloud Eagle Singers.

Using Valerie's historic research and her GIS story maps, 5 immersive site specific pieces were created and installed with signage from the City of Santa Fe. This project is unique in the breadth of artists' mediums represented, the historical rigor from the collaborating historian, and the collaboration of the city government.

The project makes use of cutting edge augmented reality features and emerging technologies, including Snap custom landmarkers, ML hand tracking, photogrammetry, motion capture, and more. I acted as the Augmented Reality Creative Director for the project. Ojos Diferentes was also a 2023 Webby Nominee.
